A hotel beside the dunes on the Carmarthenshire coast

The Ashburnham Hotel is on Ashburnham Road at Pembrey, beside Burry Port and a short drive from Llanelli in Carmarthenshire (SA16 0TH). Its own pages should be your first stop for current rooms, packages and numbers.

We photographed Charlette and Nick's wedding here on 6 October 2018, and their day is the one in this guide: a ceremony in a pale room hung with chandeliers, a kiss on a sofa under a camper-van cushion, a mint-green camper van beside the hotel and portraits on the dunes in the golden hour. Our Carmarthenshire guide and Swansea and Gower guide show more of the coast.

This wedding was in October, so ask the hotel how its rooms and the dunes look in other seasons, and check its current wedding packages.

01 / The setting / What we saw on the day

A ceremony room with chandeliers and a coastline beside the car park

Rather than quote figures that may be out of date, we describe what we saw on the day. Charlette and Nick's ceremony was in a pale function room with cream drapes, brass chandeliers and rows of chairs facing a window, and the hotel sits beside open scrubland and the road to the coast.

Ask the hotel for its current brochure, the numbers its ceremony room and dining room hold, what is included in its wedding packages and what its bedroom availability is for your date.

02 / October 2018 / Charlette and Nick

Charlette and Nick: a chandelier ceremony, a camper van and the golden hour on the dunes

Charlette and Nick married on 6 October 2018. Nick wore a navy suit with a red tie and a tweed waistcoat, and Charlette a fitted white gown with a sweetheart neckline, a tiara and a bouquet of red flowers. The photograph at the top of this page is their sunset kiss, the sky glowing behind them.

In the ceremony room the couple stood at the front facing a window, with a long aisle of guests behind. In the next photograph Charlette smiles as Nick slides on her ring; then, once they are married, the two of them kiss under the chandeliers while guests laugh in the rows around them.

Walking back down the aisle, the couple hold hands and grin at the guests on either side. Outside, a mint-green camper van, one of the details they chose, made a retro backdrop for a formal portrait, and on the sofa inside, a cushion printed with a camper van sat beside them as they kissed.

As the sun dropped, we took the couple out onto the scrubby dunes, Nick holding out a hand as Charlette's veil lifted in the wind, then back across the car park with the sun at their backs and a glass-fronted building glowing beside them.

Planning your photographs at the Ashburnham Hotel

Questions to put to the hotel, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony room: Charlette and Nick married in a pale room with chandeliers and a window behind the registrar. Ask which room your date uses and how the aisle will be set.
  2. The dunes: The dunes gave us a wide, wild backdrop in the golden hour. Check which areas are safe and public, and bring flat shoes for sand and scrub.
  3. Autumn light: In October the light turns gold and short, so we plan portraits for the hour before sunset and keep family groups for earlier in the afternoon.
  4. A camper van or car: A vintage camper van added colour. If you are bringing a special vehicle, tell us when it arrives and where it will be parked.
  5. Group photographs: We make as many as you wish, usually around 15, which take about 20 minutes. Choose a spot with room for everyone and a sheltered fallback, and ask someone who knows both families to gather people.
  6. Coastal weather: The coast can be breezy, which helps a veil and tests a hairstyle. Agree an indoor fallback with the hotel and we will use the dunes between showers.

One team for the photographs and the film

Cam and Beth, the Bright Sight photo and video duo

Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together, so a coastal hotel with a chandelier ceremony room and dunes beside it is planned once: one timetable, one list of questions for the hotel and one shared portrait walk for photographs and film.

The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £400 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages. When the drive is over two hours we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.
