This guide follows eight real weddings in east Cheshire, between the Cheshire plain and the edge of the Peak District: Alcumlow Wedding Barn near Congleton, Sandhole Oak Barn at Hulme Walfield, Hilltop Country House at Prestbury, Shrigley Hall near Macclesfield and Larkspur Lodge and Colshaw Hall near Knutsford. Standard full-day packages start at £2,099 for photography, £2,099 for videography or £3,799 for both, with travel included and a £120 deposit to secure your date.

Weddings in east Cheshire, where the plain meets the Peak

East Cheshire is a different place from the Cheshire of Chester and the Wirral. Here the flat farmland of the plain runs up against the first hills of the Peak District, and the venues are barns on working farms, country houses in formal gardens and a hotel on the edge of the National Park. Couples arrive from Manchester, Sheffield and the Potteries, so a guide to east Cheshire is often a guide to a middle point between three cities.

We have photographed and filmed eight weddings here across 2022, 2023 and 2024. A groom sitting on a groomsman’s shoulders to point at the view, a bride in a full tulle skirt on the edge of a lake at dusk, two people on a rope swing and a bride and groom bouncing on a hotel bed are all in the stories below, because the best photographs of a day often come from the moments in between.

We work quietly around the day. You stay with your guests, we step in only when a little direction helps, and the photographs and film grow out of what really happens. Our wider Cheshire guide covers Chester and the west, and our Manchester, Sheffield and Staffordshire guides cover the cities and counties that surround east Cheshire.

01 / Astbury, near Congleton, Cheshire / Martha & Harry, Lauren & Jon and Georgia & Marcus

Alcumlow Wedding Barn: tall maize, white house frames and a barn lit pink

Alcumlow Wedding Barn is at Alcumlow Hall Farm, near Congleton, and we have photographed three weddings here: Martha and Harry in August 2022, Lauren and Jon in July 2023 and Georgia and Marcus in August 2023. The portrait at the top of this guide is Martha and Harry, kissing among tall green maize plants with a bouquet of sunflowers.

A bride and her four bridesmaids in blue dresses stand in a row smiling at one another with sunflower bouquets in front of a pointed timber door topped with an iron lantern
A bride in a long lace gown and a groom in a navy suit stand hand in hand in front of tall white arched gates with black iron hinges and an iron lantern above
A bride walks down a paved aisle on the arm of a man in a dark suit between rows of seated guests towards tall white house-shaped frames in the open air, with white blossom in the foreground and a blue sky above

The first photograph below is Georgia and Marcus’s ceremony kiss inside the timber barn under a canopy of fairy lights, with their seated guests applauding. Outside, Martha and Harry’s bridesmaids stand in blue dresses with sunflower bouquets before a pointed timber door, and the couple stand hand in hand in front of tall white arched gates with black iron hinges. Lauren walks down a paved aisle between rows of guests towards tall white house-shaped frames in the open air.

The day finishes with movement. Lauren and Jon’s groom sits on a groomsman’s shoulders to point into the distance with two friends beside him, and Martha and Harry’s first dance in black and white has a twirl under large illuminated letters. If you are choosing a barn, ask what the plan is for the ceremony if the crops are wet or the wind is up, and how the room changes for the evening.

In black and white, a bride in a full-skirted gown is twirled under her partner's arm in their first dance on a wooden floor, with large illuminated letters and a clock face on the timber wall behind them

02 / Hulme Walfield, near Congleton, Cheshire / Andy & Paula

Sandhole Oak Barn: a twirl beside a still lake and a pink dusk sky

Sandhole Oak Barn is on Manchester Road at Hulme Walfield, near Congleton, and the venue says it is set within 400 acres of Cheshire countryside, centred on a private six-acre lake. Andy and Paula married here on 13 April 2022. The photographs begin with the two of them smiling at each other, he bearded in a navy jacket and grey waistcoat, she in a strapless gown with a pearl necklace and a blue and white bouquet.

A groom in a blue textured jacket looks down at what he holds as he faces his bride in a strapless gown and veil in a timber-framed hall, with guests seated along the aisle
A groom in a blue jacket raises an arm to twirl his bride, whose white skirt swirls, on the grass beside a still lake under a pink and gold sunset sky at Sandhole Oak Barn
A bride in a full tulle gown and a groom in a blue jacket embrace and kiss beside a still lake, with the low sun behind them

In a timber-framed hall, Andy looks down at what he holds as he faces Paula and guests look on. At the lake, a groom in a blue jacket raises an arm to twirl his bride, whose white skirt swirls, under a pink and gold sunset sky. Then the two embrace and kiss beside the still water with the low sun behind them, and rest their foreheads together under a pink dusk sky.

A lake like this is worth planning for, so ask the venue where the best light falls in the evening and which path is safe in the dark. Allow a few quiet minutes there between the meal and the dancing.

03 / Prestbury, near Macclesfield, Cheshire / Anfal & Elfateh and Leanne & Terry

Hilltop Country House: a clipped hedge, a rope swing and a staircase in the ferns

Hilltop Country House is on Flash Lane at Prestbury, near Macclesfield, and the venue describes a 17th-century country house in 15 acres of formal gardens, fields and woodland. We have worked on two weddings here in August 2022: Anfal and Elfateh on 25 August and Leanne and Terry on 12 August. The first photograph is Anfal and Elfateh forehead to forehead in front of a tall clipped hedge, she in a lace-sleeved gown and veil, he in a grey three-piece suit and red tie.

Leanne and Terry are at the top of a garden staircase, seen from below through ferns and shrubs, Leanne in white and Terry in blue at a white balustrade. If you choose a house like this, ask which parts of the garden are open to you on the day and where guests can go while you have a few minutes alone.

04 / Pott Shrigley, near Macclesfield, Cheshire / Amy & James

Shrigley Hall: a vintage car, a champagne spray and a bounce on the hotel bed

Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa is at Pott Shrigley, near Macclesfield, and the venue describes a 19th-century country house on the edge of the Peak District National Park with over 262 acres of grounds. Amy and James married here on 21 October 2023. The first photograph is the two of them nose to nose beneath an oak branch as her long veil blows across the frame.

A laughing groom in a dinner suit and his bride holding a trailing bouquet of white flowers walk hand in hand through confetti outside a church as guests crowd in on both sides
A bride and groom smile at each other with glasses in their hands, seen through the window of a cream vintage car with an ice bucket and a bottle beside them
A groom in a dinner suit sprays a bottle of champagne in a wide arc while his laughing bride raises her bouquet, in front of the stone hall with its balcony and columns

Outside a church, a laughing groom and his bride walk hand in hand through confetti, and in a cream vintage car the two smile at each other with glasses in their hands. In front of the stone hall with its columned entrance, James sprays a bottle of champagne in a wide arc while Amy raises her bouquet, and the two stand together on the iron balcony above the entrance.

In the park they laugh nose to nose in front of open parkland and a tree with yellowing leaves, and the last photograph is in black and white, the two holding hands and laughing as they bounce on a hotel bed beneath an ornate plaster ceiling. An October wedding at a hotel like this rewards a plan for the light: the best of it is low, so keep portraits close to the building straight after the ceremony.

05 / Knutsford, Cheshire / Melissa & Oliver

Larkspur Lodge: a mirror, a bare bulb and a speech that makes a bride cry

Larkspur Lodge is on Bexton Lane in Knutsford, and the venue describes a converted 18th-century shippon barn with red brick walls and exposed timber trusses, offered for exclusive use. Melissa and Oliver married here on 9 April 2022. The first photograph is of the two of them pressing their foreheads together in front of a leafy hedge, she in an off-the-shoulder gown and veil and he in a black morning coat.

A bride holding her groom's face kisses him under strings of fairy lights and hanging greenery, with candles on a chequered floor and smiling guests either side at Larkspur Lodge

Before the ceremony Melissa holds a champagne flute while a woman styles her hair, seen in a mirror, and in black and white she hugs a man in a dark suit with a bare bulb hanging behind them. In the barn, the bride holds her groom’s face and kisses him under strings of fairy lights and hanging greenery, with candles on a chequered floor.

The last photograph is Oliver reading his speech beneath hanging light bulbs, in black and white, while Melissa looks up at him tearful and smiling and guests laugh. A speech like that is easier to keep if you tell your photographer and film team where it will happen, so we are in place before it starts.

06 / Over Peover, near Knutsford, Cheshire / Hannah & Rob

Colshaw Hall: sage robes by the grand piano, a staircase and confetti under the beams

Colshaw Hall is in Over Peover, just outside Knutsford, and the venue describes a Grade II listed hall on a private country estate. Hannah and Rob married here on 28 March 2024. The morning begins with Hannah in a white robe and her bridesmaids in sage green satin robes on a cream sofa beside a grand piano, raising their glasses.

A bride in a white robe and a group of bridesmaids in sage green satin robes sit together on a cream sofa beside a grand piano and raise their glasses in a bright room with draped curtains
A bride in a fitted gown with a long veil and train holds a bouquet of white flowers and walks down a carpeted staircase beside tall leaded windows and a gilt mirror
A groom in a black dinner suit with a white flower in his buttonhole kisses his bride in a veil beside a tall window with panelled shutters
A groom in a black dinner suit and a bride with her arm raised and a bouquet in her hand walk hand in hand out of a timber-beamed doorway through confetti, guests reaching in from either side

Hannah walks down a carpeted staircase beside tall leaded windows in a fitted gown with a long veil and train, and later she and Rob kiss beside a tall window with panelled shutters, he in a black dinner suit with a white flower in his buttonhole. Outside, the two walk hand in hand out of a timber-beamed doorway through confetti, her arm raised.

The last photograph is another kiss beside a tall window as they sit together with a bouquet of white roses. A March wedding at a hall like this gets its light from the windows, so ask which rooms face the sun and plan the portraits around them.

Planning a wedding in east Cheshire and on the Peak edge

Barns on working farms

Alcumlow and Sandhole are both barn venues on farmland, with long views, tall crops in summer and a lake at Sandhole. Ask each venue what the arrangements are for access, car parking and the farm around the barn, and how the ceremony space changes into the meal and the evening party.

Houses in formal gardens

Hilltop at Prestbury has gardens, fields and woodland, Colshaw Hall is a Grade II listed hall on a private estate, and Shrigley Hall stands in over 260 acres of grounds on the edge of the Peak District National Park. These suit couples who want a house, a lawn and a staircase to photograph, so ask which rooms and garden spaces are included on your date.

Autumn, spring and the long summer evening

Our eight weddings were in March, April, July, August and October, so the light varies a lot. Tell us the sunset time on your date and we will talk through where couple portraits fit around the meal, because a March wedding at Colshaw and an August wedding at Hilltop ask for different plans.

Hills, wind and wet-weather plans

Weather on the edge of the Peak District can turn quickly. Agree an indoor ceremony or portrait space with your venue before the day, and keep a few umbrellas for guests, so a change of plan feels calm.

Getting guests there

Many guests will come from Manchester, Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent. Share a short transport note with directions and parking, and ask the venue whether guests can stay on site or nearby.

How we travel to you

East Cheshire is more than two hours from our base near Cardiff, so we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it. That means traffic on the morning cannot affect your day, and travel across England and Wales is included in our standard full-day packages.

Before you enquire: write down every address your day will use, from where you get ready to where guests sleep, and any ceremony spaces you are still choosing between. Send it with your date and venue and we can talk through the order of the day.

For the west of the county, see our Cheshire guide, and for the surrounding areas our Manchester, Sheffield and Staffordshire guides.

Hearing the day again: wedding films in east Cheshire

A photograph keeps a face. A film keeps the voice that goes with it: vows in a timber barn, a speech that makes a bride cry and laugh in the same breath, the sound of a dance floor lit pink. We film the way we photograph, from the edge of your day and without asking you to repeat anything for the camera.

A highlight follows your day in the order it happened, so watching it feels like the day again rather than a trailer for it.

Our full-day video packages include a 7 to 10 minute highlight and a 40+ minute documentary film. Explore the wedding videography package for current inclusions, or browse our wedding films for more celebrations.

One team for the photographs and the film across east Cheshire

Cam and Beth, the Bright Sight photo and video duo

Booking photography and film with the same team means one conversation about the timetable, one set of questions for your venue and one plan for the couple portraits. Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together since 2016, so a barn that turns from ceremony to dinner and a garden at golden hour are familiar ground.

The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £400 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages, so a barn near Congleton and a hall near Knutsford are priced the same way. If your day uses more than one location or has an unusual timetable, tell us the plan and we will confirm how it fits.

How is this different from your Cheshire guide?

Our Cheshire guide covers the whole county, including Chester and the west. This guide is about east Cheshire, where the plain meets the edge of the Peak District, with a closer look at barns, houses and the journey from Manchester, Sheffield and Stoke-on-Trent.

Which real weddings can we see in this guide?

Martha and Harry, Lauren and Jon and Georgia and Marcus at Alcumlow Wedding Barn, Andy and Paula at Sandhole Oak Barn, Anfal and Elfateh and Leanne and Terry at Hilltop Country House, Amy and James at Shrigley Hall, Melissa and Oliver at Larkspur Lodge and Hannah and Rob at Colshaw Hall.

Yes. Travel across England and Wales is included in our standard full-day packages. East Cheshire is more than two hours from home, so we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.

Can you photograph a barn wedding and a country house wedding in the same day?

Yes. Tell us every address and how long guests will take to move between them, and we will plan the photographs and film around your actual order of the day.

What if it rains on the Peak edge?

Agree an indoor alternative with your venue before the day and build a little slack into the timings. Most of the weddings in this guide had at least one outdoor moment, and the photographs are better when everyone has a plan B they are happy with.

How much does a Cheshire East wedding photographer and videographer cost?

Our standard full-day packages start at £2,099 for photography, £2,099 for videography and £3,799 for photography and videography together.
