A country house in the hills above Windermere

Broadoaks Country House is on Bridge Lane at Troutbeck, near Windermere in Cumbria (LA23 1LA). The venue describes a house perched among the hills and surrounded by glorious woodland, with manicured gardens, an orangery with crackling fires, a famous music room designed by William Morris and 19 guest bedrooms plus a grand honeymoon retreat. It is licensed for ceremonies both inside and outside.

We have worked on three weddings here: Leanne and Mikey in September 2021, on film, Olivia and Tyler on 15 April 2023, and Matt and Taylor on 23 August 2025. This page follows the last two in photographs, opened by Olivia and Tyler at the swing. Our Lake District guide shows Broadoaks beside other Lakeland venues; here we stay with the house itself. What we say about the buildings and the grounds comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

The orangery, the music room and the gardens

The venue's wedding pages describe weddings of up to 120 guests in the day and up to 150 in the evening (another page gives 100 for the day, so ask for the current figure in writing). The celebration room is the orangery, with crackling fires and contemporary charm, and the music room, designed by William Morris, brings Edwardian architecture indoors.

Outside there are manicured gardens in the hills and woodland. In Olivia and Tyler's and Matt and Taylor's photographs the grounds give a rope swing under tall trees, a drive in front of the stone house, long evening grass beside a stone wall and, a short way off, a wooden jetty on a still lake.

02 / April 2023 / Olivia and Tyler

Olivia and Tyler: green satin, white blossom and a swing under the trees

Olivia and Tyler married at Broadoaks on 15 April 2023. The photograph at the top of this page is from their portraits: Tyler in a black dinner suit holding the rope of a wooden swing while Olivia sits on it in an off-the-shoulder gown with a bouquet of white flowers in her lap.

The morning starts on a bed under a dark four-poster headboard, where Olivia, in white, sits among bridesmaids in green satin pyjamas, all of them raising glasses. In the ceremony room, a glass-roofed space hung with white blossom, Tyler and Olivia kiss while guests smile behind them.

The groomsmen lean into the camera in comic shock, one pointing a hand at the lens to show a ring, and the whole party then walks arm in arm along the drive in black suits, green satin dresses and sunglasses, the stone house and the hills behind them.

03 / August 2025 / Matt and Taylor

Matt and Taylor: make-up in the morning and a wooden jetty at dusk

Matt and Taylor married at Broadoaks on 23 August 2025. In the morning Taylor, in a white robe, sits in a director's chair having her make-up done while her dress hangs on the door behind her, and then she sits among bridesmaids in mint green pyjamas on a window seat, all raising glasses.

In the golden evening light Matt kisses Taylor in long grass beside a stone wall, her large white bouquet between them. Then they go down to the water: on a narrow wooden jetty Taylor holds Matt's hand and looks back at him, they walk the edge of the jetty hand in hand with tree-covered hills beyond, and at dusk they stand at its end in silhouette, kissing, on a still lake under a pink and grey sky.

04 / Staying at Broadoaks / From the venue's own description

Nineteen bedrooms and a honeymoon retreat

The venue lists 19 guest bedrooms plus its grand honeymoon retreat, and an accessible room, Walnut, that opens straight from the car park by a ramp. Ask which rooms come with your booking.

For photographs, getting ready on site means the make-up, the dress and the flowers are close to the ceremony, as both mornings here show. Tell us your rooms and timings and we will plan the morning around them.

A real wedding on film

Broadoaks Country House: Leanne and Mikey’s September 2021 wedding on film

Leanne and Mikey’s highlight film retells their September 2021 wedding at Broadoaks Country House, from the first moments of the day to the evening. Their wedding was filmed rather than photographed, so the film is where you can see and hear how a wedding here looks, then ask the venue which of its spaces suit your numbers.

Planning your photographs at Broadoaks Country House

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony: Inside or outside, depending on numbers and the weather. Tell us your choice so we can plan the morning around it.
  2. The lake at dusk: The jetty portraits came from the last of the light. We check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you before the day.
  3. Rain: Agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day, and we settle it together on the day.
  4. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Choose somewhere with room and a sheltered backup, and ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  5. Portraits: We usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The swing, the drive, the long grass and the lake give you very different backdrops.

One team for the photographs and the film

Cam and Beth, the Bright Sight photo and video duo

Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together, so a country house with an orangery, a swing and a lake is familiar territory. You get one conversation about the timetable, one set of questions for the venue and one plan for the portrait walk.

The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £400 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages. When the drive is over two hours we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.
