A traditional oak barn on a working farm in the Surrey Hills

Gate Street Barn is on Gate Street at Bramley, a few miles south of Guildford in the Surrey Hills (GU5 0LR). The venue describes a working regenerative farm and a traditional barn built with oak from trees lost on the farm in the 1987 hurricane, and directory listings say it is licensed for civil ceremonies.

We photographed Phoebe and Jamie's wedding here on 13 August 2024, and theirs is the day in this guide: a ceremony beneath a floral wagon wheel chandelier, a long reception table under the barn's timbers, and portraits in the farm's long grass and borders, some of them shot on 35mm film. Our Surrey guide shows more weddings in the county.

For current venue details, explore Gate Street Barn. This wedding was in August, so ask the venue how the barn and the farm look in other seasons, how many guests it holds for the ceremony and the meal, and what its current packages and hire terms are.

A timber barn, wildflower borders and farm tracks

The barn is a timber-framed building with tall glazed ends, a high roof and an oak frame, and the farm around it has gates, tracks, hedgerows and wildflower borders that make easy portrait backdrops within a short walk. A tipi with a fire pit is used for evening guests at some weddings.

Directory listings give different guest numbers for ceremonies, so ask the venue for its current figures, how the barn is arranged for your numbers and how late music and dancing can run.

02 / August 2024 / Phoebe and Jamie

Phoebe and Jamie: a wheel chandelier, a lifted kiss and a table under the timbers

Phoebe and Jamie married on 13 August 2024. Jamie wore a sage-grey tweed suit and a sprig of greenery in his buttonhole, and Phoebe a vintage-style ivory dress with a lace bodice and long sleeves, with a bouquet of orange, coral and pink blooms. Their dress hung on the white door of a brick and tile-hung cottage, wrapped in climbing roses, before the ceremony.

The ceremony took place beneath a wagon wheel chandelier hung with flowers, with paper stars in the rafters and the guests seated on wooden cross-back chairs. Afterwards, the long reception table ran down the barn under the oak timbers, set with glasses and wildflowers, in the light from the glazed end.

Part of the day was shot on 35mm film, and the scans keep the film rebate along their edges. In one, the couple walk laughing between hedgerows, Phoebe holding her skirt and Jamie holding the bouquet. In another, Jamie lifts Phoebe into a kiss in long golden grass beneath an apple tree, the sun low behind them.

Planning your photographs at Gate Street Barn

Questions to put to the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. A ceremony beneath the chandelier: Phoebe and Jamie married under a floral wheel chandelier, with daylight from the glazed ends. Ask which end of the barn is used for the ceremony on your date and how the chairs are laid out, so we can plan where to stand.
  2. A long table under the timbers: Oak beams and a long table look wonderful in daylight and in the evening. Ask when the barn is set so we can photograph the table before guests sit down.
  3. Farm tracks and long grass: Gates, hedgerows and wildflower borders are within a short walk. Wear shoes you can walk in on grass, and ask where portraits are best on your date.
  4. Shooting on film: We shot part of Phoebe and Jamie's day on 35mm film as well as digital. If you would like film frames, tell us early so we can plan the key moments around the extra time each frame takes.
  5. Group photographs: We make as many as you wish, usually around 15, which take about 20 minutes. Choose a spot with room for everyone and a sheltered fallback, and ask someone who knows both families to gather people.
  6. Evenings in the barn: Warm timber and fairy lights suit a relaxed evening. Ask what the barn allows for lighting and music so we can plan the evening around it.
