A country house hotel in Usk
Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel is on Pontypool Road in Usk, Monmouthshire (NP15 1SY). The venue describes a relaxed yet refined country house setting surrounded by gardens and countryside, with ceremonies, drinks, the wedding breakfast and the evening party all in one place, and says yours will be the only wedding at the hotel on your day. Its about page says the house was built in 1868 and opened as a family-run hotel in 1974.
We photographed Agata and Matt's wedding here on 2 June 2026, and their day is told in the photographs on this page, opened by the two of them among the rhododendrons. Our Monmouthshire guide shows Glen-Yr-Afon beside other venues nearby; here we stay with the hotel itself. What we say about the rooms and the grounds comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

The Ballroom, the Oak Room and the gardens
The venue's wedding page lists four reception rooms: the Ballroom, which it says seats up to 160, the Oak Room for up to 40, the Courtyard Room for up to 25 and the Library for up to 20. Its packages page and 2026 wedding brochure give the Ballroom as 150 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, and up to 220 guests for the evening, so ask which figure applies to your date.
The same four rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies, as are the gardens. The brochure gives the Library as licensed for up to 30 guests including the couple, the Oak Room up to 50 and the Courtyard Room up to 20. The Ballroom is described as air-conditioned and full of natural light, with patio doors opening onto the lawns and gardens and a private bar next door. The Oak Room is oak-panelled, the Courtyard Room looks over a courtyard with a water feature, and the Library has a conical ceiling; the about page says the Library was added in 1982 and the Ballroom and extra bedrooms in the 1990s.
In Agata and Matt's photographs the grounds give pink rhododendrons in bloom, a lawn with a weeping willow, and a cream-painted house front with pointed gothic windows and an arched doorway, and indoors a room with a timber ceiling and polished parquet floor.
02 / June 2026 / Agata and Matt
Agata and Matt: rhododendrons, a willow and an arched doorway
Agata and Matt married at Glen-Yr-Afon on 2 June 2026. The photograph at the top of this page is from their portraits: Matt in a black dinner suit and Agata in an off-the-shoulder white gown holding a bouquet of white flowers, smiling at each other among pink rhododendron blooms.
In front of the house the two of them stand in a pointed-arch doorway of the cream-painted front, gothic windows above them, framed by soft green leaves. On the lawn Matt holds Agata close beneath the trailing branches of a weeping willow, and indoors they kiss in a room with a timber ceiling, red upholstered chairs and a polished parquet floor.

Two more photographs from the gardens. Agata and Matt walk hand in hand across a lawn beneath a weeping willow, Agata in an off-the-shoulder cream gown with a bouquet of white flowers and Matt in a black tuxedo and bow tie. In the second they turn to face each other in bright sun, the green trees and hedge soft behind them.

A bridal suite, 26 rooms and Stable Cottage
The venue says that in addition to the bridal suite it has 26 rooms on site (its about page counts a 27-bedroom hotel), plus Stable Cottage in the grounds, with special accommodation rates for wedding guests. The accommodation page describes Stable Cottage as a few steps from the hotel, with a kitchen area, lounge, dining area, one double and one twin bedroom, a private secure garden and parking, sleeping up to four. The bridal suite is part of the venue's wedding packages, and check-out is by 10:30am.
Exclusive use of the whole venue is an option if you want complete privacy. The exclusive use page says the whole hotel becomes private to your party, and the brochure says it can run for one or two days and covers the Restaurant, Library and Lounge areas. Without it, you are still the only wedding that day, but other areas of the hotel may be used for private events and bedrooms you do not need can be booked by other guests.
For photographs, a room on site keeps the morning calm, with the dress and flowers close to the ceremony. Tell us your rooms and timings and we will plan the day around them.

Indoors or out, the evening and the drive in
The brochure says an outdoor ceremony is decided with you and the Superintendent Registrar from the weather forecast 24 hours before. If rain or ground conditions rule it out, the ceremony moves to the most suitable licensed room for your numbers: the Ballroom, Oak Room, Courtyard Room or Library.
The brochure says evening celebrations generally start at 7.30pm and finish at midnight, and that the hotel controls entertainment volume out of respect for local residents. It also gives minimum guest numbers on some dates, for example 75 daytime and 100 evening guests on Saturdays from April to September and in December, so ask about your date.
From the M4, the brochure directs you off at Junction 24 (the Coldra roundabout) onto the A449 towards Monmouth, then the Usk junction and the A472 into Usk. It warns of a 20mph zone, and says the hotel is on the left shortly after the river bridge.
Planning your photographs at Glen-Yr-Afon House Hotel
How the venue's own layout shapes the photographs, and what to settle with the hotel:
- Ceremony: Outdoors in the gardens, or in the Ballroom, Oak Room, Courtyard Room or Library. The venue decides on an outdoor ceremony from the forecast 24 hours before, so agree with us and the hotel how the morning runs both ways. A Library or Courtyard Room ceremony suits a small guest list, as they are licensed for 30 and 20.
- The gardens: The rhododendrons are at their best in late spring, and the willow lawn and arched doorway work at any time of year. The Ballroom's patio doors open straight onto the lawns, so a drinks reception and the group photographs can sit right outside the room where you will eat. We check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the portrait plan with you before the day.
- Rain: The venue names its licensed rooms as the ceremony fallback. For portraits and group photographs, agree an indoor or sheltered spot with the hotel when you confirm the order of the day, and we settle it together on the day.
- Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. The lawn outside the Ballroom gives room for a large group, with the house front as a backdrop; ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
- Portraits: We usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The rhododendrons, the willow lawn and the arched doorway give you very different backdrops within the grounds.
- Evening: With the evening generally running from 7.30pm to midnight, we can plan around that if you want photographs of the first dance or the dancefloor.
One team for the photographs and the film

Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together, so a country house hotel with a ballroom, gardens and a weeping willow is familiar territory. You get one conversation about the timetable, one set of questions for the venue and one plan for the portrait walk.
The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £400 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages. When the drive is over two hours we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.
