A Grade II listed house for small, exclusive-use weddings

Grassfield Hall is on Low Wath Road at Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. Its own pages describe exclusive-use weekend weddings, ceremonies in the grounds or in the period Hanley Room, and a dining room that seats about 40, while listings add about three acres of private gardens and eight bedrooms.

We photographed Sophie and James's wedding here on 12 September 2020, and their day is the one in this guide: vows beside a stone wall and an arch, a register signed in the garden, confetti on the terrace and a long veil on the front steps. Our North Yorkshire guide and York and Harrogate guide show more of the county.

For current venue details, explore Grassfield Hall. This wedding was in September, so ask the house how its gardens and rooms look in other seasons, and check its current packages and numbers.

A period room, formal gardens and a dining room for around 40

The house's wedding information describes small and intimate weddings with exclusive use of the hall and its grounds over a weekend, and a package that includes accommodation. Directories give different guest numbers for the ceremony and the dinner, so ask the house for the current figures.

Sophie and James married outdoors, and the venue says ceremonies can take place in the grounds or in the Hanley Room. Ask how the choice is made on your date, what the plan is for wet weather and how late the day can run.

02 / September 2020 / Sophie and James

Sophie and James: vows at a garden arch, petals on the terrace and a veil on the steps

Sophie and James married on 12 September 2020. James wore a navy tweed jacket with a pale blue tie and a white flower in his buttonhole, and Sophie a white gown with a V neck, a long veil and a bouquet of white blooms. In the photograph at the top of this page they kiss on the stone steps in front of the house, her veil spread across the terrace beside them.

Their ceremony was in the garden, in front of a flowered arch and a high stone wall, with the celebrant holding a folder as they exchanged rings. At the register, James is laughing and Sophie signs with her head bowed, a bouquet and a crystal vase on the table beside them.

Guests on the terrace threw confetti as the couple walked past, Sophie holding her bouquet and both of them beaming. Earlier, the two of them stood on the lawn in front of the house, each holding a large white balloon printed with a monogram, with a line of trees behind.

Around the garden, James kissed Sophie's forehead beside a tall beech with her veil trailing behind, and in the next frame Sophie threw her arms around him, laughing, with the beech's mossy trunk at her back. The symmetrical stone front of the house, with its steps and clipped shrubs, completes the set.

Planning your photographs at Grassfield Hall

Questions to put to the house, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Garden or Hanley Room: Sophie and James married outdoors, in front of a flowered arch. Ask how the house decides between the garden and the Hanley Room, and when you will need to choose.
  2. A small guest list: With a dining room for about 40, the day is close and quiet. Tell us who matters most, and we will keep those faces in the frame.
  3. The front of the house: The stone steps and the shrubs make a formal backdrop, and the veil looked wonderful there. Ask when the entrance will be clear on the day.
  4. Balloons and details: Large balloons were a lovely, simple detail on the lawn. Ask the house what it allows outdoors and bring your own anchors for a breezy day.
  5. Group photographs: We make as many as you wish, usually around 15, which take about 20 minutes. Choose a spot with room for everyone and a sheltered fallback, and ask someone who knows both families to gather people.
  6. Moorland weather: Nidderdale weather can turn quickly. Agree a covered or indoor backup with the house, and we will use the garden between showers.
