An independent country hotel with a walled garden

Hogarths Stone Manor is at Stone, near Kidderminster in Worcestershire (DY10 4PJ). The venue describes itself as an independent country hotel, and its wedding page names a Garden Room, the Pump Rooms with a Tudor-style backdrop, woodlands for outdoor ceremonies and a private walled garden. Its home page puts the hotel a short drive from Kidderminster and only 17 miles from Birmingham. The photographs show lawns, clipped hedges, old red brick and long grass.

We photographed Liz and Jack's wedding here on 2 August 2024. It was booked as photography, so this guide is built around their photographs, with their highlight film further down the page. Their portraits are the story of the page: a lawn, a brick wall, tall grasses and a veil.

For current venue details, explore Hogarths Stone Manor. Ask the venue for its ceremony licence, capacities and number of bedrooms, which its website does not state.

01 / August 2024 / Liz and Jack

Liz and Jack: a lawn, a brick wall and tall grasses

Liz and Jack married on 2 August 2024. The photograph at the top of this page is the two of them in the garden, Jack kissing Liz's cheek while she smiles and holds a bouquet of white and pale blue flowers. Their wedding has portraits only in this collection, and they are all unhurried.

They walk hand in hand across the lawn towards a red brick wall and clipped hedges, Liz looking back over her shoulder, and later lean their heads together against the brick with ivy climbing it and her train spread on the ground.

Out beyond the lawn they stand close together among tall dry grasses with Liz's veil and train trailing, and the last photograph is a soft close-up of the two of them embracing, seen through the veil.

02 / The spaces / From the venue's own pages

The Garden Room, the Pump Rooms, the woodlands and the walled garden

The venue's wedding page describes the Garden Room as a self-enclosed space that runs along the walled gardens and sits apart from the main hotel. Inside it is modern, light and airy and can be themed. Outside it has a Tudor-style exterior, which the venue suggests for group photographs, and a recently refurbished patio overlooking the landscaped gardens, with the option to move outside.

The Pump Rooms are a historic, Tudor-style setting for outdoor weddings, suited to couples who want the ceremony and the celebration in one place. The venue's woodland ceremonies page describes the woodlands as bursting with rustic charm and suitable for small, intimate ceremonies or larger gatherings. Its package pages also list a wedding ceremony room indoors without naming it, which is worth asking about as the wet-weather choice.

The wedding page says couples may have exclusive use of a private walled garden for drinks and garden games, and the hotel's home page says its chefs forage there for produce. The venue's Alternative Package serves a two-course barbecue on the terrace. The wedding page does not give a ceremony licence or capacities, so ask the venue about both.

03 / Staying and getting around / From the venue's own pages

Six room types and a step-free ground floor

The venue's rooms page lists six room types: Standard Double, Superior, Deluxe, Accessible, Feature Suite and Luxury Suite. It does not give a total number of bedrooms or check-in and check-out times, so ask the venue. Its package pages include a luxury room or suite for the couple on the wedding night.

The accessibility page says reception, the bar, the lounges and the restaurants are on the ground floor and step-free, that wide disabled parking bays are close to reception, and that there is one accessible bedroom with a wet room. It does not mention lifts, so ask about access to upper floors if any of your guests need it.

Planning your photographs at Hogarths Stone Manor

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Where the ceremony is: Outdoors at the Pump Rooms or in the woodlands, or in the indoor ceremony room the venue's packages mention. Tell us your plan and the timings so we can arrange the morning around them, and if the ceremony and the Garden Room reception are in different places, tell us the order of moves.
  2. Getting ready: Ask when your bedrooms are yours on the morning, since that is where the first photographs happen. The venue's packages include a luxury room or suite for the couple, so ask whether it is available from the morning.
  3. Rain: Agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The Garden Room is the indoor space its wedding page names, and the packages mention an indoor ceremony room. For a woodland or Pump Rooms ceremony, ask when the decision has to be made.
  4. Group photographs: The lawns give you room, and the Tudor-style exterior of the Garden Room is the backdrop the venue itself suggests. We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Ask someone who knows everyone to round people up.
  5. Portraits: We usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes. The red brick wall, the clipped hedges, the lawn and the tall grasses give you several different backdrops, and if the walled garden is yours for drinks, ask whether we can use it for portraits too. In August, we check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you.
