A historic house in 12 acres of gardens

Kenwood Hall is on Kenwood Road in Sheffield, South Yorkshire (S7 1NQ), and its own site names it the Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel and Spa. The venue's home page says the house was built in the 1840s as Kenwood House for the cutler George Wostenholm, designed by the architect William Flockton, with grounds laid out by Robert Marnock. It became a hotel in 1924 and was renamed Kenwood Hall in 1956. The venue says it has 12 acres of gardens with a picturesque lake, about a mile from the city centre, and is easy to reach from the M1.

We photographed Jess and Matt's wedding here on 19 May 2022. Theirs is the wedding in this guide, and it is one of pink flowers, soft light and a bright room.

01 / May 2022 / Jess and Matt

Jess and Matt: a bright ceremony room and pink flowers

Jess and Matt married on 19 May 2022. The photograph at the top of this page is Matt kissing Jess on the forehead in front of a bush of pink flowers, Jess in a lace gown and veil with a small bouquet and Matt in a grey check suit.

In a second photograph the two of them rest their foreheads together among the pink flowering branches. In black and white, they embrace in a bright room with a glass-panelled ceiling and tall windows, with their guests seated beside them.

Three more photographs of Jess and Matt in the grounds. They kiss on the lawn with the pointed roofs of the hall behind, Jess in a lace-sleeved gown and Matt in a grey check suit. They stand forehead to forehead against a bank of purple rhododendron, Jess's long veil trailing. And in a closer frame Matt kisses Jess's cheek with the hall softly out of focus behind them.

02 / The spaces / From the venue's own pages

Kenwood House, the Lakeview Suite and the grounds

The venue's wedding page names two spaces that can host both the ceremony and the reception. Kenwood House has original features, high ceilings and large bay windows, with chandeliers in the evening. The Lakeview Suite is a contemporary room with neutral décor and large windows overlooking the grounds. The page says the venue is licensed to hold civil ceremonies, and its wedding gallery shows ceremonies in the grounds as well as celebrations in the house. Ask whether an outdoor ceremony can be a legal one.

The page says the grounds have plenty of picture-perfect spots, including quiet places by the water and views with the original house in the background. It also lists a dedicated wedding planner, a dog-friendly welcome, a discounted accommodation package, free wedding showcases where you can see the spaces dressed for a wedding, and some late availability dates on Fridays and Saturdays. The pages do not give room capacities.

The packages page gives no prices, and asks you to contact the team for a quotation. The Intimate package is for up to 20 day guests and up to 35 more in the evening, Monday to Thursday only, excluding bank holidays and Christmas week, with the honeymoon suite and breakfast for the couple. The evening-only Twilight package is for late ceremonies or couples who marry abroad, with catering for up to 120, a DJ from 7.30pm to 12.30am, the bar open until 12.30am, mingling on the lakeview or the Terrace, the grounds for photographs, and complimentary on-site parking. A New Year's Eve package offers exclusive hire for the day and evening, with a late bar until 1am.

03 / Staying at Kenwood Hall / From the venue's own pages

Hotel rooms, parking and dogs

As a hotel, Kenwood Hall's sleep page lists Classic Double and Classic Twin rooms, Privilege rooms, a Family Room that sleeps up to four, a Junior Suite and a Superior King Suite. Check-in is from 3pm and check-out is at 12pm. The hotel charges for parking and for dogs per night, so ask for the current rates. The pages do not give a bedroom count, so ask how many rooms your wedding party can have.

Planning your photographs at Kenwood Hall

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Which room: Kenwood House or the Lakeview Suite for the ceremony, and which for the reception. Both have large windows, so ask which gets the best light at your ceremony time. Tell us your plan so we can arrange the day around it.
  2. Getting ready: ask which rooms are yours and when they are available on the morning, since check-in is normally from 3pm and that is where the first photographs happen.
  3. Group photographs: the 12 acres of gardens give you room for them, and the venue names views with the original house behind. We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes.
  4. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes. The lake, the gardens and the flowering shrubs give you very different backdrops, and the venue mentions quiet places by the water. In May, we check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you.
  5. Rain: agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The house and the Lakeview Suite are the indoor spaces the venue lists, and both have large windows for natural light.
  6. An evening-only wedding: the Twilight package is evening-only, for late ceremonies or couples marrying abroad. Tell us where and when the ceremony is, and we will plan portraits in the grounds, which the package includes, around the light.
