A hilltop manor house with a garden marquee

Llechwen Hall is at Llanfabon, near Pontypridd (CF37 4HP). Listings describe a Georgian manor house on a hilltop looking over the valleys, licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships, with a garden marquee as well as the main house, about 44 bedrooms and exclusive use of the venue for one wedding a day.

We photographed Carl and Paul's wedding here on 20 December 2018, and their day is the one in this guide: a ceremony in a beamed room hung with white drapes, a register signed beside a winter arch, dinner in the marquee and a long evening of dancing. Our Valleys and Brecon Beacons guide and Cardiff guide show more of the area.

For current venue details, explore Llechwen Hall. This wedding was in December, so ask the hotel how its rooms, marquee and views look on your date, and check its current packages and numbers.

Manor rooms, a garden marquee and views across the valleys

Listings describe a main house with beamed and panelled rooms and a purpose-built garden marquee with glass panels, drapes and a dance floor, and note that couples have the venue to themselves on the day. They also list bedrooms for guests and food prepared in the hotel's own kitchen.

Capacities and prices differ widely between directories, so ask the hotel for current numbers for the ceremony, the meal and the evening, and what is included for your date and season.

02 / December 2018 / Carl and Paul

Carl and Paul: a beamed ceremony room, a winter arch and a marquee set for dinner

Carl and Paul married on 20 December 2018. Both wore grey tweed jackets with matching waistcoats, red ties and white buttonholes, and in the photograph at the top of this page they stand forehead to forehead against white drapes, a chocolate cake with fresh berries on the table beside them.

In the first photograph one of them kisses the other on the cheek against a white curtain; in the second the two of them walk down the aisle in a close embrace, with guests clapping and a young man grinning behind them. The ceremony room has low painted beams strung with fairy lights.

At the register they sign beside a winter arch of ivy and lights and a window with leaded panes, one of them looking down at the pen. Afterwards they stood side by side in the marquee, with white trees, chandeliers and tables dressed with red-ribboned chairs behind them.

Later, one of the grooms bent to feed a child cake among a crowd of young guests, and in the final photograph from the evening the two of them kiss on the dance floor under purple light, friends dancing around them. The last picture in our selection is from the morning, one groom adjusting his tie in a mirror.

Planning your photographs at Llechwen Hall

Questions to put to the hotel, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony room: Carl and Paul married in a room with low painted beams and fairy lights. Ask which room your date uses and how the aisle and seating will be set.
  2. The marquee: The marquee was a bright room with white drapes and chandeliers. Ask about heating in winter, where the dance floor will be and when the room is ready for us to photograph the tables.
  3. Short winter days: In December, daylight is brief, so we plan portraits and family groups before the meal and let the lights of the house and marquee do the work afterwards.
  4. Getting ready: A morning photograph in a mirror, with a red tie being adjusted, is easy to plan. Tell us where each of you will get ready and when, so we can arrive on time.
  5. Group photographs: We make as many as you wish, usually around 15, which take about 20 minutes. Choose a spot with room for everyone and a sheltered fallback, and ask someone who knows both families to gather people.
  6. Children and guests: The photographs with the children are some of our favourites. Tell us who is coming, who is close to you, and anyone you would like us to look out for.
