A family estate with its own pond

Micklefield Hall is on Sarratt Road in Sarratt, near Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire (WD3 6AQ). The venue describes itself as nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside, about 25 miles from London, and says it is a privately owned family estate of 350 acres. Weddings have been held on the lawn here since 1999, according to the venue, and it is an exclusive-hire estate with one event per day.

We have photographed and filmed weddings here between 2022 and 2024. This page follows two of them in photographs: Becky and Tae in June 2022 and Charlotte and Matt in August 2022. Our London guide and Buckinghamshire guide mention the hall as a neighbouring-county wedding. Here we stay with the estate itself, with a highlight film from each wedding. What we say about the spaces comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

For current venue details, explore Micklefield Hall. Viewings are by appointment only.

The pond, the barn and the gardens

The venue lists five licensed areas for civil ceremonies: the Great Barn, the Orangery, the Temple, the Garden Room and the Great Lawns. The Temple is an outdoor space under a great oak beside the pond, which the venue says seats up to 200. The Great Barn is a restored barn with oak beams, a heated oak floor, a dance floor, a stage and a bar, and a viewing platform above the stage, and the venue says it holds up to 200 guests.

The Orangery has a stone floor and a real fireplace, and the venue says it is used mainly for drinks receptions and as the wet-weather backup. The gardens include a herbaceous garden with a fountain, a secret rose garden, rolling lawns and a French courtyard tucked under blossom trees. The venue asks for real petals or biodegradable confetti, does not allow confetti cannons, fireworks or Chinese lanterns, and says the bar closes and the music stops at 11.30pm. Each of these is the venue's own information, so confirm the details for your date.

02 / June 2022 / Becky and Tae

Becky and Tae: a bright dressing room and a very playful lift

Becky and Tae married at Micklefield Hall on 11 June 2022. Their day starts in a bright attic room with a sloping ceiling and a rooflight, where Becky sits in a satin robe having her make-up done by a friend, her dress hanging beside the doorway.

Their ceremony is beside the pond, and a small pavilion stands at its far end beneath overhanging oak branches. The same pavilion is behind the last photograph from their day, where a group of groomsmen in morning suits laughs as they lift Becky horizontally off the ground in front of it.

03 / August 2022 / Charlotte and Matt

Charlotte and Matt: petals, emerald green and a sunset by the fence

Charlotte and Matt married here on 5 August 2022, two months after Becky and Tae, and the same pond looks different with a stronger sun and a deeper blue sky. The wide photograph of their ceremony shows rows of guests along both sides of the water and the couple at the far end, small beneath a big oak, with white clouds overhead.

Afterwards they walk through a shower of red and pink petals, hand in hand, both smiling, Charlotte carrying a bouquet of white flowers and greenery, Matt in a black dinner suit and bow tie. Charlotte's bridesmaids wear emerald green satin and stand in a line with her in front of the pavilion, each with a white bouquet.

The evening is in the barn. In black and white, a saxophonist in glasses plays with one arm in the air and his legs wide, in the middle of dancing guests, with the timber frame and a chandelier behind him. The photograph at the top of this page comes from the last of the light, when Matt dips Charlotte against a wooden fence beside a golden field.

June or August at the same pond

The two weddings fell two months apart, and the light shows the difference: in August the oak beside the pond is dark against a bright blue sky and the fields behind the fence turn gold in the evening. Both ceremonies sit beside the water, so the outdoor space is the same in both, but the light you get is not.

We check sunset and light times for your date in advance, whichever month you choose. The venue also says it offers a shorter three-hour civil ceremony and drinks hire from Monday to Wednesday and on off-season Thursdays, which is worth asking about if you want a smaller day.

04 / Staying at Micklefield / From the venue's own description

Bedrooms in a converted barn and a Shepherd's Hut

The venue lists six bedrooms in a converted cow barn, each named after a member of the family or the family dog, and a Shepherd's Hut that it calls its seventh bedroom. It also mentions glamping. Rooms can be booked individually or all together, guest access starts at 12.30pm on the wedding day and check-out is by 10am, with breakfast served in the Breakfast Room from 8.30am.

For photographs, the venue has a private bridal Dressing Room with salon-style chairs and a large mirror, and a Groom's Room above the Great Barn. Ask which rooms come with your booking and when you can use them, so we can plan the morning around where each of you is getting ready.

Planning your photographs at Micklefield Hall

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Which ceremony area: with five licensed areas, ask which one suits your numbers and the season, and tell us so we can plan the morning around it.
  2. Rain: agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. On the day we settle it together with you and the venue.
  3. Group photographs: we do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Choose somewhere with room and a sheltered backup, and ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  4. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. Between the pond, the gardens and the fields there are plenty of backdrops to choose from.
  5. Getting ready: if you and your partner are in different places, we move between you together, splitting our time as a team. Groom preparation typically takes about 15 minutes.

Cam and Beth, the Bright Sight photo and video duo

Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together, so an estate with a pond, a barn, an orangery and a lot of lawn is familiar territory. You get one conversation about the timetable, one set of questions for the venue and one plan for the portrait walk.

The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £300 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages. When the drive is over two hours we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.
