A family-run barn on the Essex and Suffolk border

Smeetham Hall Barn is on Smeetham Hall Lane at Bulmer, near Sudbury (CO10 7EU). The venue's own pages give the county as Suffolk and Essex, and describe a family-run barn venue that has hosted countryside weddings for over 25 years, with a barn it says is over 400 years old, a front lawn, a courtyard and a lake and pond in the grounds.

We photographed and filmed James and Laressa's wedding here on 31 August 2024. Their day is the one in this guide: a ceremony beside the water, a walk down a garden aisle with a flower girl, pink smoke beneath the trees and a spray of champagne on a gravel path.

James and Laressa: a ceremony by the water, pink smoke and a champagne spray

James and Laressa married on 31 August 2024. The photograph at the top of this page is the two of them on the garden aisle, James in a rust-coloured velvet jacket holding the hand of a small flower girl, with guests and a house with a tower behind them. Before the ceremony, James stands beside a white car with two of his wedding party, all three in black bow ties.

The ceremony is beside a stretch of water, with James and Laressa standing before a celebrant beneath a timber arch wound with greenery, children and guests close by.

Afterwards the wedding party walks a tree-lined path holding pink and white smoke flares, and later James sprays champagne beside Laressa on the gravel. The day ends outside after dark, with the two of them in front of a lit glass doorway.

The barn, the lawn and the courtyard

The venue's home page lists a restored barn for the wedding and reception, with a high-vaulted ceiling and original timber beams, a front lawn for outdoor ceremonies in summer or for drinks receptions, and a bridal dressing room. Its pages also mention a marquee and a courtyard, and say venue hire includes exclusive use of the grounds, with access from the morning before the wedding until midnight on the day and permanent fairy lights.

The pages give different numbers for the barn. The home page lists a ceremony capacity of 150, a wedding reception of 150 and an evening capacity of 200, while the FAQ says the barn suits intimate gatherings of 30 to 40 and gives up to 150 for a sit-down wedding breakfast, so confirm with the venue. The pages do not state a ceremony licence for the lawn, say what happens in wet weather or mention accommodation on site, so ask the venue. Dogs can attend the ceremony and drinks but must leave before the wedding breakfast.

Planning your photographs at Smeetham Hall Barn

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Where the ceremony is: the barn or the front lawn. Tell us your plan and timings so we can arrange the morning around them.
  2. Getting ready: ask when the bridal dressing room is yours on the morning, since that is where the first photographs happen.
  3. Group photographs: we do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. The lawn and the courtyard give you room.
  4. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The tree-lined paths, the lawn and the water give you very different backdrops. In August, we check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you.
  5. Rain: the venue's pages do not give a wet-weather plan, so agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The barn and the marquee are the covered spaces the pages mention.
