A nineteenth-century villa in ten acres

St Tewdrics House is on Mathern Road, near Chepstow in Monmouthshire (NP16 6HX). Wedding listings describe a nineteenth-century Italianate villa in about ten acres of landscaped grounds, licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 150 guests, with exclusive use, eight bedrooms that sleep up to 16 and an in-house wedding coordinator.

We photographed Kay and Tom's wedding here on 22 March 2019, and their day is the one in this guide: a ceremony beside tall windows, confetti at the villa's doorway, portraits among the sheep and sparklers after dark. Our Monmouthshire guide and Bristol guide show more weddings either side of the Severn.

For current venue details, explore St Tewdrics House. This wedding was in March, so ask the venue how its gardens and views look in other seasons, and check its current packages and prices.

01 / The spaces / From venue listings

A ceremony room with a view, gardens and open fields

Listings describe a villa with a licensed ceremony space, landscaped gardens and on-site parking, and a venue that is hired for exclusive use, so there is no other wedding in the house. They give hire and catering prices that differ from site to site.

The venue's own brochure is the place for current prices, numbers and what is included on your date. Ask which room your ceremony will use, how late music can run and what the arrangements are for guests staying overnight.

02 / March 2019 / Kay and Tom

Kay and Tom: a glass-walled ceremony, petals at the doorway and sparklers after dark

Kay and Tom married on 22 March 2019. Tom wore a grey suit with a pale tie and Kay a lace gown with a long veil, a tiara and a bouquet of cream roses, and in the portrait at the top of this page they hold each other in front of the villa's arched doorway, one lantern lit beside the stone.

A groom in a grey suit holds hands with his bride in a lace gown and veil beside a smiling celebrant, in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to bare trees

The ceremony took place in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows, their view of bare trees and fields behind the celebrant, who smiles as the couple hold hands. In a black and white photograph, the two of them stand hand in hand on the gravel in front of the whole house, its square tower rising behind.

Afterwards, Kay's bridesmaids in dusky pink gathered either side of the doorway and threw petals as the couple stepped out. Further into the grounds, Kay and Tom stood under a tall pine on the lawn with their foreheads together, and in a quiet corner by an old stone wall, they leaned in beside a weathered door.

A white gazebo with a red-tiled roof stood on a stone terrace above a field of sheep, with the Severn estuary glinting in the distance, and the two of them framed themselves inside it. After dark, Kay threw her bouquet high into the night as her friends reached up, and the last photograph is a kiss in the glow of sparklers outside the doorway.

Planning your photographs at St Tewdrics House

Questions to put to the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony room: Kay and Tom married beside tall windows with a long view. Ask which room your date uses, how the chairs will be set and where your celebrant will stand.
  2. The front of the villa: The arched doorway and the gravel made a formal backdrop for confetti and portraits. Ask when the entrance will be clear on the day and what the venue allows.
  3. Fields and views: The gazebo and the open fields gave wide portraits above the estuary. Check which parts of the grounds are open to you and bring shoes for the grass.
  4. March light: In March the evening light is early, so we plan family groups and portraits ahead of the afternoon meal and keep the doorway and sparklers for dusk.
  5. Group photographs: We make as many as you wish, usually around 15, which take about 20 minutes. Choose a spot with room for everyone and a sheltered fallback, and ask someone who knows both families to gather people.
  6. After dark: A bouquet toss and sparklers need space and a plan. Ask the venue what it allows after dark and where guests can stand safely.
