A brick barn venue in Northampton

The Barns at Hunsbury Hill is a barn wedding venue in Northampton, run by The Hunsbury Hill Centre, which gives its address as Harksome Hill, Northampton, NN4 9QX. Its wedding information pack describes a beautiful 18th century setting overlooking the Nene Valley. The venue's web pages were returning a server error when we checked, so the facts below come from that pack, which is published on the venue's own site.

We photographed Louise and Brett's wedding here on 27 May 2022. This page has three photographs from their day.

Louise and Brett: red brick, blossom and evening light

Louise and Brett married on 27 May 2022, and we photographed their day. In the photograph at the top of this page they stand close together smiling in front of a red-brick barn, Louise in a white lace gown with a bouquet of white flowers and Brett in a navy suit with a grey waistcoat.

In the next they walk hand in hand along a brick-paved path beside a brick wall, smiling at each other, with a tree in blossom and strings of lights behind them.

The last is from the end of the day. They kiss in low evening sun with a barn strung with warm lights behind them, and the light catches the edge of the picture.

Three more photographs show the barn and its yard. Louise and Brett stand close on the gravel in front of the red ironstone barn, Louise holding a white bouquet and Brett in a navy suit with a grey waistcoat and pink tie. In the next, Brett leads Louise by the hand along a narrow brick path beside a hedge, guests gathered at the far end. And inside, they kiss in front of a curtain of fairy lights, a tall stack of doughnuts on a table beside them.

02 / The spaces / From the venue's own pack

The High Barn, the Low Barn and the lawns

The pack says venue hire includes exclusive access to the High Barn, the Low Barn, the covered bar area and the lawned areas, with access between 9am and midnight on the day. The venue is fully licensed for civil ceremonies, held in the High Barn, and its packages include Chiavari chairs. A ceremony fee applies, and you book the registrar separately through the council's website.

The High Barn seats up to 85 for a wedding breakfast, and the pack's example is 77 guests on seven round tables plus 8 at a top table. For the evening the maximum is 180 across the High Barn, the Low Barn and the covered bar area, with seating for about 40 in the High Barn so there is room for a dance floor and a DJ on the mezzanine. The bar is in a covered and heated patio area that leads from the High Barn.

03 / The evening / From the venue's own pack

Music and the bar finish before midnight

The venue's music and entertainment licence covers music inside the High Barn, and you can bring your own DJ. Music must stop 30 minutes before the end of the hire or by 11.30pm at the latest, and live music by 10.30pm, with a band of no more than four players. The bar closes on the same 11.30pm rule, and the pack says these times cannot be extended because of licensing. Only alcohol from the venue's bar can be drunk on site, apart from table wine you provide by prior arrangement, which carries a corkage charge.

Planning your photographs at The Barns at Hunsbury Hill

The venue's pack answers part of the layout. Here is how we would plan around it, and what is still worth asking:

  1. Where the ceremony is: the pack names the High Barn for civil ceremonies. Tell us the time, the address and the order of the day so we can plan the morning, the travel and the first photographs around it.
  2. Group photographs: we do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Ask someone who knows everyone to round people up. The lawned areas are included in your exclusive access, so ask the venue which spot suits a large group.
  3. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. Louise and Brett's photographs show red brick, a paved path beside a brick wall and a barn strung with lights.
  4. Rain: the pack names a covered and heated patio area leading from the High Barn, and the Low Barn is included in hire. Ask which of them the venue would use for drinks and photographs if it rains, and agree it when you confirm the order of the day.
  5. The evening: music must stop by 11.30pm at the latest and live music by 10.30pm, so plan the first dance and any portraits in the last light well before then. Tell us the sunset time on your date and we can plan the evening around it.
  6. Getting there: the pack does not mention parking or overnight accommodation, so ask the venue about both.
