A historic estate in 300 acres of parkland

Worstead Estate is at Smallburgh in North Norfolk (NR12 9NB). The estate describes itself as a historic North Norfolk retreat offering countryside weddings, and its wedding page names The Woodyard, a restored thatched barn and sawmill in the 300 acres of Worstead Park. Ceremonies can be held in the Thatched Barn, on Lake Island, in the Walled Garden or by the lake, the Mulberry Room is the wedding breakfast space, and couples have the estate exclusively for three days.

We photographed Brittany and George's wedding here on 22 August 2026, and their day is the one in this guide: a ceremony in front of a brick chimney breast and white floral arches, confetti on the gravel in front of the thatched barn, and portraits in the walled garden with a small dog. Our Suffolk guide shows more weddings across the East of England, and here we stay with the estate. What we say about the buildings comes from the estate's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

For current venue details, explore Worstead Estate. Ask the estate how the grounds look in other seasons, since this wedding was in late August.

The Woodyard, the lake and the Walled Garden

The estate's wedding page describes a beautifully restored thatched barn and sawmill in the 300 acres of Worstead Park. It lists four places for a ceremony: the Thatched Barn, Lake Island, the Walled Garden and the lakeside, and names the Mulberry Room as the wedding breakfast space. The Walled Garden is also offered for cocktail hours or breakfasts.

The page says couples have the estate exclusively for three days, choose their own caterers and are offered the 'You and I', a 1930s wooden rowing boat, to row across the lake after the ceremony. It does not give guest numbers, finishing times or a dog policy, so ask for all three in writing.

02 / August 2026 / Brittany and George

Brittany and George: a thatched barn, confetti on the gravel and a dog in the walled garden

Brittany and George married on 22 August 2026. The photograph at the top of this page shows them walking hand in hand along the gravel in front of the thatched barn through confetti thrown by their guests, Brittany holding a bouquet and George in black tie.

Their ceremony was in a timber-floored room with a tall brick chimney breast behind them, sheer white drapes and two white floral arches. George raises Brittany's hand while the guests clap. Afterwards, at a wooden table with an old brick wall behind them, he kisses her as they sign the register, her bouquet of white roses beside them.

Their portraits were in the walled garden. In the first, a close portrait is framed by an arched iron window in the old brick wall, Brittany laughing with her veil behind her.

Between two brick gate piers, with a white house with arched windows behind them, George kisses Brittany's cheek. In the last, the two of them hold their small curly-haired dog between them, and George kisses the dog.

Planning your photographs at Worstead Estate

A few things worth asking the estate, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony: Brittany and George married inside the barn. The estate also lists Lake Island, the Walled Garden and the lakeside, so ask which suits your numbers and what the wet-weather plan is.
  2. Confetti: The petals on the gravel made one of the best photographs of the day. Ask the estate what it allows, so you know which kind to buy.
  3. The walled garden: The brick walls, the arched window and the white building gave this couple their portraits. Ask which parts of the gardens are open to you and when.
  4. Your dog: Brittany and George had their dog in the portraits. The estate's wedding page does not give a dog policy, so ask in writing before you plan on it.
  5. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Choose somewhere with room and a sheltered backup, and ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  6. Portraits: We usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The barn, the lake and the walled garden give you very different backdrops.
