An ivy-covered house in 12 acres

Dewsall Court is near Hereford in Herefordshire (HR2 8DA). The venue says exclusive hire covers its 12 acres of grounds, surrounded by 1,000 acres of Duchy of Cornwall land and looking out to the Black Mountains. It lists eleven ceremony spaces, a barn conversion for receptions of up to 170 guests, and accommodation for up to 28 guests, with stays of one or two nights.

We photographed and filmed Xenia and Jack's wedding here on 15 June 2024, and their day is told in the photographs on this page, opened by the two of them in front of the ivy-covered house. Our Herefordshire guide shows Dewsall Court beside other Herefordshire venues; here we stay with the house itself. What we say about the buildings and the grounds comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

01 / The spaces / From the venue's own description

Eleven ceremony spaces in twelve acres

The venue's wedding page lists eleven places for the ceremony: the Pole Barn, the Canopy, the Birch Trees, the Arboretum, the Church, the Church Lawn, the Lake Field, the West Lawn, the Wainhouse, the Conservatory and the Chinoiserie. Receptions in the barn conversion hold up to 170 guests, and the page mentions live music and an after-party den in the cellar. It gives no formal curfew, so ask for the current times in writing.

In Xenia and Jack's photographs the house is covered in ivy, a gravel path runs under the trees where the bridesmaids raise their bouquets, and a wooden deck among the trees makes a perch for the last light of the evening.

02 / June 2024 / Xenia and Jack

Xenia and Jack: a newspaper morning, wildflowers and a lift on the deck

Xenia and Jack married at Dewsall Court on 15 June 2024. The photograph at the top of this page is from their portraits: Jack in a navy suit holding Xenia, who looks up smiling with a bouquet of wildflowers tied with pale blue ribbons, in front of the ivy-covered stone house.

The morning is full of jokes. The bridal party in white robes hide their faces behind newspapers headed The Happy Times on a canopy bed with a barrel-shaped chest at its foot, and later Xenia, laughing in a white robe, has her hair dried in a director's chair beside floral curtains. In black and white Jack shrugs on his jacket by a heavy curtain, and two wedding rings rest on a white window sill.

At the bay window a bridesmaid in pale blue adjusts Xenia's gown and long veil, and out on the gravel the bridesmaids, in pale blue dresses, raise their bouquets as Xenia, seen from behind, stands with her veil trailing along the ground.

Rooms for up to 28 guests

The venue says it offers stylish accommodation for up to 28 guests, with stays of one or two nights. It does not give a bedroom count on its wedding page, so ask which rooms come with your booking.

For photographs, getting ready in the house means the dress, the hair and the little jokes of the morning, like the newspaper, happen a few steps from the ceremony. Tell us your rooms and timings and we will plan the morning around them.

Planning your photographs at Dewsall Court

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony space: With eleven spaces to choose from, decide early. Tell us your choice so we can plan the morning and the light around it.
  2. Getting ready: Ask which rooms you can use and from when. The calm of a morning in the house shows in the photographs.
  3. Rain: Agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day, and we settle it together on the day.
  4. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Choose somewhere with room and a sheltered backup, and ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  5. Portraits: We usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The ivy-covered house, the gravel path under the trees and the deck give you very different backdrops.

One team for the photographs and the film

Cam and Beth, the Bright Sight photo and video duo

Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together, so a country house with a barn, a church lawn and open fields is familiar territory. You get one conversation about the timetable, one set of questions for the venue and one plan for the portrait walk.

The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £400 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages. When the drive is over two hours we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.
