A family-run barn wedding venue on the Leicestershire and Derbyshire border

Donington Park Farmhouse is on Melbourne Road at Isley Walton, Castle Donington (DE74 2RN), on the Leicestershire and Derbyshire border. Its own site describes a family-owned barn wedding venue with 20 bedrooms, set in 25 acres of countryside, and says weddings have been held in the barn since the 1980s.

Kelly and Luke: red brick and evening light

Kelly and Luke married on 2 June 2022, and we photographed and filmed their day. The highlight film further down this page is from it. Below is a photograph of their wedding that is on this site, and another is at the top of the page.

They kiss in front of a red-brick wall with white-framed windows and neatly clipped bushes. Kelly holds a bouquet of dusty pink flowers and Luke wears a light grey suit. The warm brick does a lot of the work.

The photograph at the top of this page was taken in warm, low sunlight: they kiss again with a glowing sky behind them. Luke is in a waistcoat and pale blue shirt, and Kelly is in lace with her pink bouquet.

Three more photographs: Luke, in a light blue-grey suit, kisses Kelly in front of the red-brick wall with its large white arched doors, her bouquet of pink and lilac flowers held between them. They stand hand in hand against the farmhouse wall, Luke in a purple tie and Kelly in a pearl necklace, smiling at each other. The Threshing Barn, the courtyard and the Stackyard

The venue's wedding page names the Threshing Barn for ceremonies and receptions, and says it is licensed for ceremonies there, with the civil registrar booked separately through the Leicestershire Registration Service. It also lists converted old pig sties as a dining space, a courtyard and newly converted stables. The home page names the Stackyard as the evening party space.

For numbers, the wedding page gives a formal wedding breakfast for up to 150 guests in the barn, casual food service for up to 300 and 300 guests in the evening. It describes exclusive use of the estate. The venue's pages describe the barn's age in different ways, so ask if it matters to you.

Twenty bedrooms across the farmhouse, courtyard and stables

The venue lists 20 bedrooms across the farmhouse, the courtyard and the stables. Its wedding page says five are included with exclusive venue hire and the other 15 can be booked by guests at discounted rates. Ask which rooms come with your booking and when you can have them on the morning of the wedding.

Planning your photographs at Donington Park Farmhouse

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

1. The ceremony: the venue says the Threshing Barn is licensed, but you still book the registrar yourselves. Tell us the time so we can plan the morning and the first photographs around it.
2. Group photographs: we do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Ask someone who knows everyone to round people up, and ask the venue which outdoor spot suits a large group.
3. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. Red brick and open countryside both give you strong backdrops, and warm evening light is lovely here.
4. Rain: agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The barn, the dining space in the old pig sties and the stables are the indoor spaces the venue lists.
5. The evening: if you want portraits in the last light, tell us the sunset time on your date and we can plan the evening around it.
