Down Hall Hotel, Spa & Estate is on Matching Road at Hatfield Heath, on the border of Essex and Hertfordshire (CM22 7AS). The venue says it sits in 110 acres of woodland, parkland and landscaped gardens, and describes the setting as across both Hertfordshire and Essex. Its own address is in Essex.

We photographed and filmed Leonard and Stephanie's wedding here on 28 July 2022. It is the day in this guide, and it takes in a chandeliered staircase, a quiet morning, a garden portrait and a first dance in front of a wall of pink blossom.

Leonard and Stephanie: chandeliers, a red-carpeted staircase and a first dance

Leonard and Stephanie married on 28 July 2022. The photograph at the top of this page is the two of them close together in a sunlit garden, Stephanie holding a bouquet of pink roses. The day begins indoors, with the wedding dress hanging from a balustrade beneath the chandeliers and a glass skylight, and Stephanie in silhouette by a bright window while her make-up is done.

Later Stephanie comes down a staircase with a red patterned carpet, bouquet in hand, while Leonard waits in the foreground in a pale suit and pink tie.

The Bridgeman Suite, the West Wing and the Charles Garden

The venue's wedding page describes an intimate ceremony in the West Wing and a wedding breakfast in the Bridgeman Suite, which it says has had an extensive refurbishment and can seat up to 180 guests. It describes its largest room as holding 180 guests, and a smaller room called Rookwood for 2 people, with large windows looking over the landscaped gardens. The page also mentions a Master Suite.

The Charles Garden is a half-acre outdoor space beside the Bridgeman Suite that the venue says launched in spring 2026, so it is newer than the wedding in this guide. The venue says it is licensed for outdoor ceremonies for up to 180 guests, with a wide lawn, a decorative archway, a 2-metre-wide central aisle, a drinks terrace with a permanent bar and a separate lounge garden. The venue also lists a Bespoke Intimate package for 2 to 30 guests. The page says the venue cannot arrange the registrar for you, so contact the registrar directly.

Planning your photographs at Down Hall

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

1. Where the ceremony is: the West Wing, the Charles Garden or another room the venue offers for your date. Tell us your plan so we can arrange the morning around it.
2. Getting ready: ask which room you will have on the morning and from what time. The staircase and the chandeliered stairwell are worth including in your plans.
3. Rain: agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day, especially if you choose the garden for your ceremony.
4. Group photographs: we do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Pick a spot with room and ask someone who knows everyone to round people up.
5. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The grounds give you gardens, planting and the staircase indoors. In July we check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you.
