A working farm for outdoor weddings

Duddon Mill Farm is on Mill Lane near Tarporley in rural Cheshire (CW6 0HA). The venue describes itself as a wedding and events venue set in 65 acres of mixed farmland, well suited to tipi weddings, marquee weddings and other outdoor events, and says it has more than fifteen years of wedding and event experience.

We photographed and filmed Rebecca and Sam's wedding here on 3 August 2024. This page follows their day in photographs. Our Cheshire guide and Liverpool guide show Duddon Mill Farm beside other venues, and here we stay with the venue itself. The venue's own website is short, so what we say about the setting is limited to what it states, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

For current venue details, explore Duddon Mill Farm. Our wedding here was in August, so ask the venue how the farm looks and feels in other seasons.

01 / The setting / From the venue's own description

Orchards, a pond, barns and a stream through the middle

The venue says the estate has mature apple orchards, a pond, barns and a stream running right through the middle of it, and that there are endless photo opportunities for lovers of the outdoors. Its weddings are built around a tipi or a marquee, so the ceremony, meal and evening depend on the structure you choose.

The venue's website does not give guest numbers, timings or a list of bedrooms, so ask the team for those in writing when you enquire. It says viewings are strictly by appointment only.

02 / August 2024 / Rebecca and Sam

Rebecca and Sam: tipis, a willow tree and a full dance floor

Rebecca and Sam married at Duddon Mill Farm on 3 August 2024. The photograph at the top of this page is from their evening portraits: Sam in a white shirt and tan braces and Rebecca in her lace dress, kissing as the low sun flares behind them and soft green trees fall away beyond.

In the morning Rebecca raises a glass with her bridesmaids on a stone terrace, most of them in matching pyjama sets, with two canvas tipis behind them. Later the couple stand close beneath a willow tree on a lawn, Rebecca in her veil with a hand on Sam's cheek, the long branches hanging around them.

On the grass, Sam in a white shirt and linen trousers is held flat out in the air by five groomsmen, every one of them laughing, with trees across the field behind.

In the evening the first dance happens forehead to forehead inside the tent, under string lights and a swag of white fabric, guests smiling behind them and a band's microphone stand in the corner.

Later the dance floor fills, and the lights streak across the roof of the tent as guests sing and dance in the blur of the movement.

Planning your photographs at Duddon Mill Farm

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Timing: The venue's website does not state ceremony times or a finish time, so ask what the day looks like for a tipi or marquee wedding. Tell us your timings once you have agreed them with the venue and we will plan the portrait walk around the light.
  2. Evening light: Our wedding here was in August, and the golden evening photographs in this guide came from the open grass and the trees around it. We check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you before the day.
  3. Rain: With an outdoor-led venue, agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day, including where family photographs can happen if the ground is wet. On the day we settle it together with you and the venue.
  4. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  5. Getting ready: If you and your partner are in different places, we move between you together, splitting our time as a team. Groom preparation typically takes about 15 minutes. Ask the venue where each of you can get ready, and how close it is to the tipi or marquee.
