A red-brick barn on the Welbeck Estate

Hazel Gap Barn is on Budby Road in Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire (NG22 9EY). The venue describes it as a dramatic and distinctive red-brick barn on the Welbeck Estate, with a courtyard, an Oak Room that looks over gardens and woodland, and the barn itself for ceremony, dining and dancing. The photographs show red brick, timber beams, gravel underfoot and hedges that turn red in the colder months.

We photographed and filmed Hayley and Martin's wedding here on 10 December 2023. Theirs is the wedding in this guide, a winter day with short daylight, which makes the courtyard and the lit barn do a great deal of the work.

Hayley and Martin: a beamed aisle, a gravel courtyard and a first dance

Hayley and Martin married on 10 December 2023. The photograph at the top of this page is the two of them walking arm in arm on the gravel in front of the red-brick buildings, Hayley in a lace gown with a long veil and Martin in a black dinner jacket and bow tie.

Inside the barn, Hayley comes down the aisle in a long white dress with a woman in white beside her, under timber beams hung with greenery, while Martin waits in the foreground in a dark velvet jacket. Outside the barn, Martin lifts her off the ground in an embrace.

The first dance is in the same brick barn, lit with fairy lights and green and amber uplights. Martin spins Hayley through their first dance while guests look on.

The barn, the Oak Room and the courtyard

The venue says civil ceremonies take place in the barn, licensed for up to 150 seated guests, and that couples can also marry in a church and celebrate in the barn. It gives 150 for ceremony and dining and 250 in total for the evening, and says the barn is yours for the day and can be decorated as you wish.

The page names the Oak Room, with views over gardens and woodland, and a courtyard with a fountain, mulberry trees, seating and planters. In the evening the courtyard is lit with fairy lights, fire pits and lanterns, according to the venue. It lists a late-night licence until 1am.

Cuckney House and the estate cottages

The venue's page lists Cuckney House, an 18th-century manor about five minutes' drive away, as self-catering accommodation for up to 38 guests across 15 bedrooms, with a function room for up to 50. It also mentions twelve further cottages to rent on the Welbeck Estate. The page does not say that guests can stay in the barn itself, so ask the venue what is available for your date.

Planning your photographs at Hazel Gap Barn

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

1. Where the ceremony is: in the barn, or in a church with the celebration afterwards. Tell us the addresses and times so we can plan the morning and the first photographs around them.
2. Group photographs: the courtyard and the gravel in front of the buildings are good places for them. We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes.
3. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The courtyard, the red-brick walls and the estate give you several backdrops close to the barn.
4. Winter dates: daylight is short in December, so keep outdoor photographs close to the barn and plan them for the first part of the afternoon. We check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you.
5. Rain: agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The Oak Room and the barn are the indoor spaces the venue lists.
