A Palladian house and two acres of walled gardens

Middleton Lodge Estate is on Kneeton Lane at Middleton Tyas, near Richmond in North Yorkshire (DL10 6NJ). The venue's wedding page describes a Palladian main house with views across the parkland and two acres of walled gardens redesigned by Tom Stuart-Smith, and says the estate is privately owned. It adds that it is five minutes from Scotch Corner.

We photographed and filmed one wedding here: Angel and Adam on 20 August 2023. Their day is the one in this guide, and it is a good picture of the estate in late summer, with flower beds in golden light and a ceremony in front of an ivy-covered stone building.

01 / August 2023 / Angel and Adam

Angel and Adam: flower beds, an ivy-covered ceremony and a skylit dance

Angel and Adam married on 20 August 2023. The photograph at the top of this page is Adam kissing Angel's forehead in low golden light, in front of beds of pink and orange flowers, her bouquet of white roses held between them. Elsewhere in the gardens the two of them embrace among tall grasses.

The ceremony is outdoors, with guests in rows on the paving in front of a stone building with arched windows and ivy, tall trees behind. At one point Adam and Angel laugh with their foreheads together while guests look on.

Later, Adam twirls Angel on a stone floor in a room with arched windows and a skylight, guests gathered around the edge. The two of them also pause in a bright room with a tall arched window, close together, with the bouquet of white flowers between them.

02 / The spaces / From the venue's own page

The Main House, the Fig House and the Garden Marquee

The venue's wedding page sets out its spaces as combinations. In the Main House, the Drawing Room holds a ceremony of 75 seated, and the Main Hall holds 75 seated or up to 120 including standing guests on the balcony and stairs. In the walled gardens, the Boiler Bar holds a ceremony of 90 seated or up to 120 with standing guests, and the Fig House holds 160 seated.

For the wedding breakfast, the page lists 160 in the Garden Marquee or 120 in the Fig House, and it gives 200 for evening guests and 100 for the Cellar Bar. It does not mention a ceremony licence, so ask the venue about it. The page also says smaller celebrations of two people up to 30 guests can be hosted midweek.

03 / Staying at Middleton Lodge / From the venue's own pages

Bedrooms in the Main House and across the estate

The venue's wedding page lists 17 bedrooms in the Main House at weekends and on bank holidays (12 midweek), including the honeymoon suite, and bedrooms across the walled gardens in the Potting Shed and Orchard. Its separate Stay page gives a larger figure for rooms across the whole estate, so the numbers on the two pages differ and you should confirm current room numbers with the venue. For photographs, a room on the estate means getting ready close to where the day happens.

Planning your photographs at Middleton Lodge Estate

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Which ceremony space: the Drawing Room, the Main Hall, the Boiler Bar, the Fig House or somewhere outdoors on the estate. Tell us your plan so we can arrange the morning around it.
  2. Getting ready: ask which bedrooms are yours on the morning and from what time, since that is where the first photographs happen.
  3. Rain: agree an indoor option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The Main House rooms and the Fig House give you indoor choices for the ceremony and for group photographs.
  4. Group photographs: we do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Choose somewhere with room and a sheltered backup.
  5. Portraits: we usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The walled gardens, the flower beds, the grasses and the bright rooms of the house give you very different backdrops. In August, we check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you.

One team for the photographs and the film

Cam and Beth have photographed and filmed over 400 weddings together, so a country house with walled gardens, an ivy-covered terrace and bright arched rooms is familiar territory. You get one conversation about the timetable, one set of questions for the venue and one plan for the portrait walk.

The photo and video team package carries a £120 deposit and a £400 saving over booking photography and videography separately. We are based near Cardiff, and travel across England and Wales is included in standard full-day packages. When the drive is over two hours we always stay in a hotel the night before and cover it.
