A converted barn on a working farm in Cheshire

Owen House Wedding Barn is on Small Lane in Mobberley, Cheshire (WA16 7NU). The venue describes itself as a bespoke, family-run wedding barn on a working farm in the heart of the Cheshire countryside. It says the barn was converted in 2013 and still keeps its rustic, countryside charm.

We photographed and filmed Rebecca and Jack's wedding here on 25 July 2022. This page follows their day, from the morning to the courtyard to the dining barn. Our Cheshire guide and Liverpool guide show Owen House beside other North West venues, and here we stay with the venue itself. What we say about the buildings comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the pictures comes from looking at them.

For current venue details, explore Owen House Wedding Barn. The venue's own site gives its current figures and policies, and its pages carry a 2023 copyright date, so check them when you enquire.

A ceremony room, two preparation sheds and a photographic studio

The venue has an on-site civil ceremony room next to the wedding barn, reached through what it calls a secret door. It is licensed for ceremonies, which are conducted by Cheshire East registrars, and the venue says it has been styled with fairy light curtains. Its main barn page says the ceremony room seats 120 with standing room for 150, while the ceremony room page says it holds up to 150, so ask which figure applies to your plans. The barn seats 200 for the wedding breakfast and the venue gives 250 for the evening reception.

Getting ready happens on site. The Beauty Shed has salon chairs, hairdryers, mirrors, a soft seating area and a shower room, and it links directly to the ceremony room. The Baa-ber Shed is for the groom and his groomsmen, with table football, a beer fridge, showers and a barber chair. The venue also has a quiet break-out room next to the main barn for guests who want a pause.

For portraits the venue offers the Shooting Gallery, a photographic space with star cloths, rustic doors, plants, wooden panelling and a large white wall. Outside it lists an orchard of apple, pear and cherry trees, a pond with a jetty, and over 150 acres of fields. Food comes from caterers the venue names, Vanilla in All Seasons or The Cheshire Dining Experience, and the venue has its own bar.

02 / July 2022 / Rebecca and Jack

Rebecca and Jack: a laughing ceremony, bubbles and giant letters

Rebecca and Jack married at Owen House Wedding Barn on 25 July 2022. The photograph at the top of this page is from their ceremony: Jack, in a navy jacket, lifts Rebecca's hand to his lips while she laughs, in a dark timber-ceilinged room with guests on wooden benches behind them and fairy lights at the edge of the frame. It is one of two photographs from their wedding that we saved as favourites. The other four pictures on this page are stills from their highlight film, and we say so beside each one.

The other saved favourite is from the morning. Rebecca stands in a bright, plain room in a lace dress with small white flowers in her hair while a woman in a leopard-print shirt finishes her lipstick, both of them smiling.

Three more photographs from their gallery are of the day itself. Rebecca and Jack face each other holding hands in the dim timbered hall, guests seated behind them. They kiss among green leaves, Jack holding a bright red, white and blue Captain America shield and Rebecca a bouquet of blue paper flowers. And they walk arm in arm along a paved path through a clipped hedge arch strung with festoon lights, the shield on Rebecca's arm.

From here the pictures are stills from the highlight film. Outside, Rebecca and Jack walk arm in arm through a courtyard strung with festoon lights, Rebecca looking down with a smile and Jack beaming at her, a red, white and blue Captain America style shield at her side.

In a quieter still they stand among green leaves, Rebecca looking up at Jack with a flower in her hair, the same shield and a toy hammer in front of them.

Their kiss comes in a shower of bubbles in the courtyard, with guests lining the way behind them and Rebecca holding a bouquet of blue and copper flowers that look folded from paper.

The last still is the dining barn before the meal: giant lit letters spelling R and J on a white wall between old brick arches, round tables in white cloths with wooden cross-back chairs, orange and peach flowers, and a small shield and hammer beside the letters.

Rooms for the wedding party, in exclusive use

The venue says its accommodation is for your wedding party only. It lists eight double rooms and two family rooms, four mezzanine rooms with a king-size bed above, three bedrooms in the neighbouring farmhouse B&B, and the Birds and Bees suite with a bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and an outdoor copper bath. Breakfast is served in a converted container the venue calls the tool shed, and the venue says it is included in the room price.

You are given a code to share with your guests, so you control who can book rooms for your day. For photographs, ask which rooms the bridal party and the groomsmen can use in the morning and when they open.

Planning your photographs at Owen House Wedding Barn

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Timing: The venue's website gives no ceremony start time or closing time, so agree your timings with the venue first. Tell us once you have agreed them and we will plan the portrait walk around the light.
  2. Summer light: Rebecca and Jack married in July, and their pictures show a courtyard under a pale sky with festoon lights, green leaves and a barn lit warmly inside. Ask the venue how the orchard, pond and fields look in other months.
  3. Rain: Agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. The Shooting Gallery is a photographic space inside the barn, so ask whether it can serve as your wet-weather plan. On the day we settle it together with you and the venue.
  4. Ceremony room numbers: The venue's pages give two figures for the ceremony room, 120 seated and up to 150. If your guest list is close to either number, ask for the current figure in writing.
  5. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Ask the venue where it suggests standing larger groups, and ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  6. Getting ready: If you and your partner are in different places, we move between you together, splitting our time as a team. Groom preparation typically takes about 15 minutes. At Owen House the Beauty Shed and the Baa-ber Shed are separate buildings, so tell us which of you is using which.
