A farm above a river in the Welsh borders

Wilde Lodge is at Lower Stanage Farm near Knighton in Powys (LD7 1LU), on the Welsh side of the border. The venue says its grounds cover 15 acres set above a river, with views of a stream, forests and hills, and that the whole place is yours for exclusive hire, from a Friday to a Monday for a weekend wedding.

We photographed and filmed Alice and Matthew's wedding here on 27 September 2025, and their day is told in the photographs on this page, opened by the two of them crossing the fields. Our Shropshire guide and Herefordshire guide show Wilde Lodge beside other venues on the Welsh borders; here we stay with the farm itself. What we say about the buildings and the grounds comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

01 / The spaces / From the venue's own description

Six ceremony spaces and a late licence

The venue's wedding page lists six ceremony spaces with seated capacities: the oak-beamed Long Barn for 90, the Open Barn for 120, the Motte and Bailey Mound for 90, and the Front Lawn, the Entrance Field and the Oak Field for 120 each. It also lists a safari tent and a sail tent among its spaces, and mentions a late licence, firepits and star gazing for the evening.

In Alice and Matthew's photographs the farm gives a barn with oak beams and fairy lights, an open barn hung with ribbons and bunting where guests sit on hay bales, a slate-walled corner for the vows, fields with a wooden stile, and a gravel track in front of green hills for the group photograph.

Alice and Matthew: hay bales, a stile and a big group on the track

Alice and Matthew married at Wilde Lodge on 27 September 2025. The photograph at the top of this page is from their portraits: Alice in a fitted white gown with a bright bouquet and Matthew in a cream three-piece suit and green tie, walking arm in arm across a green field with hedges and wooded hills behind them.

The morning is calm. In black and white a woman in a floral dress adjusts Alice's hair beside a bed in a pale bedroom, and then Alice comes down a wooden staircase with her veil held to one side, a gilt mirror on the wall behind.

The ceremony is among the beams of the barn. Alice and Matthew walk arm in arm along a red patterned carpet under oak beams hung with fairy lights, guests smiling on both sides, and later they sit on hay bales in front of a slate wall strung with lights, smiling as a man speaks in the foreground. In the open barn guests sit on hay bales and benches under ribbons and bunting, the stone farmhouse behind.

Out in the fields Matthew holds Alice's hand as she steps in her veil over a wooden stile, and on the gravel track the whole wedding party, in cream suits and bright pink, yellow, purple and green dresses, cheer and lean towards the camera in front of the hills.

03 / Staying at Wilde Lodge / From the venue's own description

A six-bedroom lodge and bell tents

The venue says the main lodge has six bedrooms and four bathrooms and sleeps 14, with three bell tents on decking in its garden that guests book directly (available from 1 May to 30 September), and a separate bell tent village run in partnership with Hels Bells. Planning your photographs at Wilde Lodge

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Ceremony space: Six options, from the Long Barn to the fields. Tell us your choice so we can plan the morning and the light around it.
  2. Your group photograph: The gravel track with the hills behind made room for a very big wedding party. Choose somewhere with space and a sheltered backup.
  3. Rain: Agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day, and we settle it together on the day.
  4. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Choose somewhere with room and a sheltered backup, and ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  5. Portraits: We usually take a portrait walk of about 15 minutes, with photo and video together. The fields, the stile and the farm buildings give you very different backdrops.

One team for the photographs and the film

Cam and Beth, the Bright Sight photo and video duo
