A country house on the edge of the Peak District

Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa is at Pott Shrigley, near Macclesfield in Cheshire (SK10 5SB). The venue describes it as a romantic 19th century country house on the edge of the Peak District National Park, with over 262 acres of grounds. Its history page says the present hall was built in 1825, was a missionary college run by the Salesian order from 1929 until 1986, and opened as a hotel in 1989.

We photographed and filmed Amy and James's wedding here on 21 October 2023. This page follows their day in photographs. Our Cheshire guide, Manchester guide and Sheffield guide show Shrigley Hall beside other venues, and here we stay with the venue itself. What we say about the hall comes from the venue's own website, and what we say about the photographs comes from looking at them.

For current venue details, explore Shrigley Hall. Our wedding here was in October, so ask the venue how the grounds and the hall's frontage look in other seasons.

01 / The spaces / From the venue's own description

Four wedding suites and 262 acres of grounds

The venue has four function rooms and says it can host anything from 50 to 300 guests. The Tilden Suite is a converted Salesian chapel with its own bar and entrance, and the venue gives its capacity as 200 for a ceremony, 240 for the wedding breakfast and 300 for the evening. The William Turner Suite is classically themed and the Ellen Turner Suite is smaller; the Drawing Room is the most intimate, with views the venue calls stunning.

The venue says its wedding coordinators plan everything from catering and flowers to decor and entertainment, and that the grounds are ideal for portraits. Parking is free, with 300 spaces at the back of the hotel. Ask which rooms and outdoor areas are included in your booking, rather than assuming every space you see online will belong to your day.

02 / October 2023 / Amy and James

Amy and James: confetti, a vintage car and a champagne spray

Amy and James married at Shrigley Hall on 21 October 2023. The photograph at the top of this page is from their portraits: James in a black dinner suit and bow tie and Amy in a lace-sleeved gown, noses almost touching beneath an oak branch, with her long veil blowing across the frame and hills and fields behind. A small silver horseshoe hangs from the ribbon on her bouquet.

After the ceremony they walk hand in hand through a shower of confetti outside the church, both of them laughing, with guests crowding in on either side and Amy carrying a trailing bouquet of white flowers and eucalyptus.

In the back of a cream vintage car, framed by its window, they hold glasses of an orange drink and smile at each other beside an ice bucket. Outside, in front of the stone hall, James lets a bottle of champagne spray in a wide arc while Amy raises her bouquet in the air, laughing.

From a distance you can see the couple standing together on the iron balcony above the columned entrance, under the pediment of the hall.

In the grounds they laugh nose to nose in front of open parkland and a tree with yellowing leaves, Amy holding a bouquet of white flowers. Indoors, in black and white, they hold hands and bounce on a hotel bed beneath an ornate plaster ceiling.

A hotel with 155 bedrooms

The venue says it has 155 bedrooms, with check-in from 3pm and check-out by 11am, and that early check-in and late check-out are not guaranteed. It also offers a Night Before I Do package, which it lists among its wedding pages.

For photographs, ask which rooms you can use for getting ready and when they open, so we can plan the morning around where each of you is. Our bedroom photograph from Amy and James's day is a reminder that a hotel room can be a good place for a quiet moment together.

Planning your photographs at Shrigley Hall

A few things worth asking the venue, and how we would plan around the answers:

  1. Timing: The venue's website does not give ceremony times or a finish time, so ask for the day's schedule for your chosen suite. Tell us your timings once you have agreed them with the venue and we will plan the portrait walk around the light.
  2. Autumn light: Our wedding here was in October, and the photographs in this guide came from beneath an oak, the open grounds and the front of the hall. If your ceremony and reception are in different places, leave time for congratulations and the journey before planning portraits. We check sunset and light times for your date in advance and agree the plan with you before the day.
  3. Rain: Agree an indoor or sheltered option with the venue when you confirm the order of the day. Ask which indoor spaces and which parts of the hall's frontage are available to you. On the day we settle it together with you and the venue.
  4. Group photographs: We do as many as you like and typically recommend around 15, which usually take about 20 minutes. Ask a groomsman or bridesmaid who knows everyone to round people up.
  5. Getting ready: If you and your partner are in different places, we move between you together, splitting our time as a team. Groom preparation typically takes about 15 minutes.
